What to have ready
A short description works better than a photograph. Before you phone, run through:
- What the door did last, when, and what you heard.
- Where the door stopped on its last run: open, closed, or part way.
- The door's rough size, single or double, and the material if you know it.
- The opener's style, chain, belt or screw drive.
- Whether a car is inside, whether anyone is in the garage, and whether a sensor light near the floor is blinking.
- For a new door, whether the house is in Barrington's historic district, since that shapes what the Village will accept.
If the door won't close tonight
A door stuck open at the end of the day is not a reason to touch the springs or the release. Keep clear of the door, close and lock the door between the garage and the house, and if the opener is still powered, turn its breaker off at the electrical panel rather than reaching the outlet in the ceiling. Then phone. Help with a door that will not wait covers the common ones.
